WHETŪ
f-eh-TOO

Te Reo Māori for star:  navigation, guidance, connection

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

At Whetū Rugby the star symbolizes

excellence, unity, and purpose.

A whakataukī is a Māori proverb.

It is a guiding statement that expresses traditional knowledge, and cultural values.

Here's ours...

Me aro ki ngā whetū,
engari me ū ki te whenua.

Keep your eyes on the stars,
and your feet on the ground.

Our philosophy

Our coaching philosophy is centered on creating an environment where players can thrive; where they are challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.

We believe in developing good rugby players and even better people. It’s about building a culture of hard work, personal sacrifice, and belief, where players push beyond what they thought was possible while still enjoying the journey.

A guiding principle in our coaching is captured by the Māori whakataukī:
Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei.
Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.

This proverb speaks to the heart of perseverance, ambition, and resilience ⎯ encouraging players to aim high, embrace challenges, and never back down lightly. If we are to yield, let it be only to something truly great.

Through rugby, we aim to instill these values — striving for excellence, staying grounded in humility, and always reaching for something greater.
